The Ponderings of a Big Foot Buddha

2005-04-23 - 2:32 a.m.

I have a bit of a dilemma on my hands these days. I find myself between jobs at the moment. Also right now the results of a hobby of mine are in somewhat of a demand.

I already have the majority of the tools and equipment I need to turn this hobby into a real business. Here is the kicker I won’t make as much for quite sometime as I would if I ended up with a “real” job again. But if I go for a “real” job I won’t have the time I need to pursue the hobby job.

So do I risk our financial wellbeing to make myself happy in my work or do I suck it up and be miserable working for someone else but have fewer or no financial worries?

The between jobs things is the result of miscommunication at a company I recently went to work for. I was hired by the branch manager because he wanted and they needed someone with my technical background. However head office figures all he really needs is a receptionist to answer phones so he can focus on the more important work himself. Now consider I make more than twice as much as a receptionist and it starts to get a bit clearer why they went with that thought. So anyways I get hired by the branch manager and off to work I go. Yay me !

It’s a pretty interesting job and I can see where they needed someone like me. I work two days and even though they had a week to get my job offer together I still haven’t seen it. Third day I have a doctor’s appointment I made several months back and I had told them about it before they ever even hired me. I was told not to bother with coming in for the couple hours in the morning before I’d have to leave and then was told I could take the day with pay since I wouldn’t be done until after lunch. Hey great I can go for that. The fourth day I’m told I can have off with pay too because they didn’t have my job offer sorted out yet. Ok this is a bit weird but I can live with days off with pay in my first week of a new job. Friday is the same story I’m told after I drive across the city in rush hour. Oh well it’s a day with pay.

Monday morning I think maybe I better phone in instead of driving if I can. I’m told once again they needed to finish getting things sorted out but now it might be a couple more days until it’s done. No worries I figure I’m getting more time with pay. Wrong, Wednesday rolls around and I now find out the truth. Human resources in head office hired him a receptionist and she started Wednesday morning. My boss is furious but not at me of course, they never told him he had a receptionist until she showed up to work and they refused to hire me. My boss had been told to go ahead and hire someone. Seems somewhere someone got their wires crossed and as a result I was out of a job before I even got started. I was told I’d get paid for my time but no one could tell me for how long or for how much. That was over 10 days ago and still no check or ROE. Come Monday if nothing is in the mail I get to call up head office and tear a strip off someone.

Sheesh
