The Ponderings of a Big Foot Buddha 2003-05-20 - 7:57 p.m. I dreamed a little dream Last night I had a dream about being involved in a car accident. Now the weird thing about this dream was that there wasn’t anything weird. I was driving my usual car, in the usual manner, in the usual city, at the usual time of day, etc. The street I was on although isn’t one I travel daily had the feel of familiarity to it. Like I had just turned off the normal street into a side street to go to a strip mall I drive by every day. The accident wasn’t my fault someone turned across two lanes of traffic to make a left from the far lane and struck the passenger side of my car. So real exciting story so far eh? Well on my way home from work the main thoroughfare I take had reports of a major accident on halfway to my turn off and reports of several minor accidents from rubber neckers and impatient motorists trying to get past. The dream I had popped back into my head after hearing this. I was already on the thoroughfare and we were backed up several miles from the accident. Thinking maybe this dream was a bit of foresight however unlikely I decided to take the next turn off I could get to and loop the block so I was headed away from the traffic backup. I have three different routes I can take to get home all with about the same amount of time, I figured I would just take one of the other two. As I was making my way around to turnabout another car from the far side of the turn lane guns his engine, spins his tires and tries to do a 180º turn. Well this Nobel Prize winning rocket scientist cuts across the turn lane from a major lane and hits the median curb after which he veers into my lane nearly striking my car on the driver’s side. Luckily I was watching this and had already braked and pulled over to the far curb. The little extra room was just enough for him to clear my car barely but clear it he did. Now here is where my head is starting to hurt. Did I manage to avoid the accident because I had the dream? Did I nearly get into the accident because I had the dream and I was trying to avoid it? Would have the accident (near miss) have happened no matter what I did or where I was driving? Was it all just a fluke of circumstances? Would have anything happened if I hadn’t turned around? Would I even have remembered the dream in another day or so? Why did I remember that dream so far into the day when I normally don’t remember dreams shortly after I wake up? Is the real accident I dreamed of still waiting to happen since reality was a bit different in the details? And most importantly if I can dream such things and they are real why can’t I dream about reading the newspaper for tomorrow’s winning lotto numbers? Maybe I’ll go see “The Matrix” this weekend and it’ll all make make more sense after that.
