The Ponderings of a Big Foot Buddha 2003-09-04 - 8:03 p.m. Having your appendix burst can be a good thing. Well ok it’s not really a good thing that it burst but the change it effected in my lifestyle sure is a nice bonus. Well firstly unto the doctor that first told me to “go home & ride it out”. This part of the deal bites. After visiting with a malpractice lawyer I was told unfortunately there wasn’t anything I could do about him. Why? Because I was never in any real danger. It’s sort of like walking into a store and stepping around the wet slick spot of tiles. You can only sue if you had fallen and hurt yourself. With my appendix because I was smart enough to go to another hospital to get checked out I was never in any real danger. Now if I had died my wife could have sued this doctor. Nice set-up for the doctor eh? Also for the same reason if I had published anything mentioning the doctor or hospital by name I was opening myself up to potential legal issues. Anyhow while I was laying around for a week with nothing to do and getting minimal sleep due to my IV getting changed every couple of hours I decided to do something constructive about my lifestyle and eating habits. I’ve known for many years how to eat and exercise properly. I learned much of it from my youth when I used to compete and more from researching nutrition. I lost 20 pounds the week I spent in the hospital and thought it would be a shame to waste the head start that gave me. So now I eat all day long and managed to drop a total of 15 more pounds over the course of eight weeks since then. I’m holding my weight constant right now as too rapid of loss is dangerous plus you are more than likely to regain the weight back after a rapid loss. I’d like to make this a permanent loss. Just as a lark next time you’re in the produce section of your grocers go and pick up three 10 pound bags and one 5 pound back of potatoes and think about carrying that extra weight around your belly all day. The change in the way my back feels just from this loss is marvelous. This month I’ll be getting ready to drop some more weight but for this last month I’ve been concentrating on getting my new eating habits firmly in place and maintaining my current weight. So thankfully the appendix thing wasn’t all bad. Weight loss isn’t a matter of fad diets or weird foods or starving yourself. In fact starving yourself is very counter productive as your body decides the lack of food intake means it needs to conserve as much energy as possible. That means you burn less fat and your body creates more fat every chance it gets. Real, permanent and healthy weigh changes for both increase and loss revolve around eating habits and lifestyle. Oh ya I also managed to kick my caffeine habit. I’ve only had small bottle of diet Coca Cola since July 4th and that was more than a month ago.
